Access to Eye Care Limited by Income and Education

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Many age-related eye conditions, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts are treatable, preventable and sometimes reversible - but only if you see an eye doctor.

From the JAMA Ophthalmology comes a new study that reinforces that persons on the lower end of the socioeconomic and educational spectrum are less likely to have access to eye care. This means that they often cannot access interventions that could either repair or preserve their vision.

Other research has similarly concluded that access to vision care often determines whether or not individuals maintain good visual health and eyesight.

Access to ophthalmologists and optometrists is extremely limited in South Los Angeles, which is due, in part, to the fact that vision care is commonly part of employer-provided insurance packages - a benefit that many southside residents do not have.

Nina Vaccaro, the executive director of the Southside Coalition of Community Health Centers explained that the other option is to pay for vision insurance out-of-pocket. However, this is not a priority for many area residents.

She went on to state that vision services are needed usually only once every few years. However, they are particularly beneficial when an individual contracts macular degeneration, glaucoma or cataracts.

In South L.A. people prioritize other things like paying their rent and putting food on the table. For many, any type of insurance is a luxury.

The study found in JAMA Ophthalmology reported that people with low incomes or who had less than a high school education were much less likely to get an eye exam or visit an eye doctor. According to the Los Angeles Times, over 50% of residents in South L.A. who are 25 and older donÂ’t have a high school diploma. Furthermore, over 40% of households in the neighborhood make $20,000 or less annually.
