(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While the French have loved snails for a long time on plates seasoned with garlic and butter, Louis-Marie Guedon, a rural snail farmer believes snails will soon become the latest beauty craze for all they have to offer while they are alive.
The mucus the snails secrete contain collagen, which is found in many skin care products and helps tighten skin and regenerate skin cells. It also contains glycolic acid and antibiotics that that help heal acne and cuts on the skin, which are also contained in skin healing treatments, both over the counter and by prescription.
Guedon is busy working to build France the first industrial-scale snail mucus-extraction operation with a target to harvest 15 tonnes of mucus in its first year in 2014. He’s already been producing snail “slime” for three years, but he’s been doing so manually, Guedon, 47, says. He’s been raising snails for a quarter of a century.
He sells 25 million baby snails a year to other snail farmers in France and other countries from a breeding stock of 650,000 garden snails.
Guedon wouldnÂ’t give the details of his industrial mucus extraction process, but it does involve placing snails in two large containers. After the mucus is extracted, filters purify the product which if then refrigerated. He says salt is used, but no snails are killed in the process.
Snail mucus is already cropping beauty products cold in Asia and South America, and Guedon believes it will become more popular as more industrial snail farms become common. In Tokyo, spas offer facials that use real live snails that crawl across patrons faces.
