Imported Herb Is Not As Safe As Homegrown

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new study conducted by environmental group Greenpeace, entitled Chinese Herbs: Elixir of Health or Pesticide Cocktail, the overuse of pesticides (as well as banned pesticides) is widespread in China. Moreover, these pesticides are present in the herbs when the country exports them or distributes them among its own population.

The World Health Organization, for years now, has found industrial contaminants and high pesticide levels present in some herbs. Additionally, both the American Herbal products Association and American Botanical Council have recognized ongoing problems with contamination, over the past two years. The main sources of these problems are herbs grown in India as well as China, where environmental safety laws are careless or nonexistent.

The Greenpeace study exposes unsafe practices in China and high levels of toxic agents in many Chinese herbs. China is currently the worldÂ’s largest supplier of herbs, yet they have repeatedly come under fire for safety concerns due to contamination. Chinese people themselves rely on herbs for health and natural medicines. They are now at high risk of significant health problems arising from poisons in their diet. These Traditional Chinese Medicines date back to over 3,000 years ago when pesticides were unheard of.

The medicines are also becoming very popular among modern herbalists. This makes the problem a worldwide one -- Traditional Chinese Medicines use of over 11,000 herbs. The herbs are typically boiled into concentrated teas. Chinatown Areas in the United States and Europe carry an overabundance of Chinese-grown or wild-harvested herbs.

In the study, 65 batches of herbs were sampled and pesticides were found in 48 of the samples. Six of those samples contained highly toxic, banned pesticides. One very popular herb, Sanqi flower, contained 39 pesticides and another, Goji, contained the residues of 25 pesticides. China has also become the worldÂ’s largest user of agricultural pesticides over the past decade.
