Marijuana Arrests Still High Despite Changing US Attitude

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Within recent years, there have been many to argue that the general attitude around the nation regarding Marijuana has shifted. In fact, a small number of states have now taken steps to fully legalize particular quantities of marijuana at the state level. However, the shift in attitude has proved to not deter the overall possession arrests in the country.

The American Civil Liberties Union has highlighted an actual focus of marijuana possession arrests within the United States. Within 2010, nearly 900,000 arrests were made within the United States. A large portion of such arrests are made specifically for possession. Nearly 90% of the 8 million marijuana arrests made in the last decade were for marijuana possession.

The ACLU identified that not only were possession charges up, but there was also a racial bias noted among such arrests. The study noted that while the number of African Americans and Anglo Americans who use marijuana are equal, the former is arrested almost four times more often than the latter.

When one is charged with possession in Connecticut, the penalties depend on the amount and the person's previous record of marijuana possession. The penalties are least severe for those who possess less than a half-ounce with no prior record. A fine of $150 to $500 can be levied based on an array of variables.

Penalties increased based upon previous conviction as well as amount over a half-ounce. In an individual has a previous conviction for the possession of the substance, a subsequent arrest can involve a five-year sentence with a $3,000 fine included.

The largest penalties are for those who have over four ounces, as a conviction can lead to a five-year sentence and $2,000 fine, even if the individual has no previous history of marijuana-related crimes. Individuals who are caught in possession of such an amount for a second time will carry a 10-year sentence with a fine up to $5,000.
