(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 03, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Julie Miller, an Oregon woman who said she repeatedly asked Equifax to correct mistakes on her credit report was awarded $18.6 million in damages on Friday. She says she contacted the Equifax Information Services department eight times between 2009 and 2001 in an effort to get six serious, inaccurate information off of her credit report.
After failing to do so, Miller filed a lawsuit against the company when she was denied credit from Hubbard bank. The federal jury awarded miller the $18.4 million in punitive damages and another $180,000 in compensatory damages. According to New York Daily News, this lawsuit is believed to be one of the largest consumer financial victories over a credit bureau in history, but the Oregonian reported that the judgement will likely be appealed.
Justin Baxter, one of MillerÂ’s representing attorneyÂ’s said that not only did she lose opportunity to seek credit, there was damage not only to her reputation and Equifax breached her privacy. Information about a different Julie Miller had mistakenly ended up on his clientÂ’s record, which means in at least one instance, her private financial information was sent to companies who requested data on the other Julie Miller.
