(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 03, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a new report released Thursday by Bowling Green State University, the National Center for Marriage and Family Research found that the U.S. marriage rate is just 31.1 percent or just 31 marriages per 1,000 unmarried women. For comparison, the national marriage rate was 92.3 in 1920.
In 2011, a Pew Research survey found that 51 percent of Americans were married, compared to 72 percent of in 1960. However, more and more couples are cohabiting, that is, living together without actually signing a marriage agreement. According to a private research company, Demographic Intelligence, less than half a million couples were cohabiting in 1960, compared to 7.5 million three years ago.
Los Angeles Times columnist Meghan Daum offered a reason for declining marriage rates earlier this year. For example, cultural rules compel couples to wait to marry until they have reached upper-class status, but the number of upper class citizens has been declining due to the recession in recent years. Another reason may be is that more acceptable living arrangement, including unmarried cohabitation, are helping add to the decline in marriage.
