(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 05, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A new proposal by the FCC would help overhaul the governmentÂ’s E-Rate program, which was originally established in 1997 to connect schools and libraries to the web via dial-up. Now, According to The Hill, the program still focuses on dated technologies, like phone directories and paging, but the FCC is planning to prioritize putting wireless networking equipment thatÂ’s capable of handling a high number of users at higher speeds.
However, instead of replacing the E-Rate program, the FCC is simply looking into how it can best alter it to provide those modern tools.
The new proposal is part of Obama’s administration’s ConnectedEd Initiative, which was revealed last month to help bring high-speed internet connections into 99 percent of US schools within the next five years. In a statement, President Obama said “To get there, we have to build connected classrooms that support modern teaching.” According to the White House, with the current E-Rate program, the needs of most students aren’t being met with the internet connections they have available to them in their classrooms.
The FCC is also moving to ensure that those high-speed connections will be available at home, in hopes to bring broadband internet to every location in the US by 2020.
