(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 05, 2013 ) New York, NY -- In an effort to keep families from going into too much debt this summer, Christians Against Poverty (Cap) has drawn up a list of ten “great summer ideas” of inexpensive or free activities. The Houghton, United Kingdom based charity is trying to keep families from being pressured into dear children’s activities that stretch household finances.
Twenty-five percent of parents feel pressured by their neighbors spending on costly summer activities for their children. In many cases, they feel they are neglecting their children by not spending on holidays they cannot afford. In a recent study, over fifty percent of the parents surveyed said they are worried about the cost of keeping their children amused. The average family in the study planned on spending £460 on entertainment this summer.
Sixteen percent of the families polled in the Post Office’s annual Parents’ Summer Spending Report plan on cutting back on their weekly shopping to finance summer fun. “Everyone wants their kids to have a lovely time in the summer, but if you want to avoid dipping into the overdraft, it will take planning. Some research and imagination at this stage will save you pounds in the holidays and help families avoid the kind of debt that can soon mount up.” says Christians Against Poverty manager, Jemma McDougall.
The top-10 list includes a “boredom jar” with inexpensive ideas written on slips of paper. A family member dips into the jar to pick an activity for a chosen day. The ideas can range from get-togethers with friends and picnics to visiting free art galleries and museums. “It really doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive for the family to enjoy time together,” suggests Jemma. “Some space, some time, some toys and a picnic can be all it takes to provide a memorable day out.”
