(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 07, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Around a third of American teenagers say that have been victims of dating violence, whether itÂ’s been physical, sexual, or mental, but almost the same amount also say they have been on the offending end.
New research studied from more than 1,000 individuals between the ages of 14 and 20 found overlapping reports of victimization and perpetration. Of the girls surveyed in the study, early 41 percent said they had been victims of dating violence, but 35 percent said they had committed dating violence at some point in their relationships.
This divide was slightly greater for boys, with 37 percent saying they had been victims of dating violence, with only 29 percent saying they had been a perpetrator in a previous relationship. Overall, however, 24 percent reported being both on the receiving and offending end in either the same or different relationships.
The researchers found that girls were far more likely to report being victims of sexual dating violence, as well as owning up to committing physical dating violence. However, boys had more often admitted to committing sexual dating violence, which included pressuring a girl to have sex when she didnÂ’t want to.
