(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 10, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a research study recently published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (July 2013), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a well-tolerated imaging modality for orthodontic treatment and surgical planning. It is an ideal tool for the diagnosis of dental abnormalities in children, according to Orthodontic Products Online.
Traditionally, a cone-beam (CT scan) has been used for this purpose but this type of imaging exposes patients, largely children, to potentially high doses of radiation. Researchers from the University of Würzburg, who conducted the study, assessed the practicability of using the MRI as a source of diagnosing dental abnormalities. The researchers looked at 16 adolescent patients with a mean age of 10.8 years. Using a 3D turbo spin echo-pulse sequence with a voxel size of 0.8×0.8×1 mm, the researchers acquired 3D images of the children’s teeth on a 1.5-T MRI scanner.
Since the MRI eliminates ionizing radiation, it is a safer alternative to dental imaging. Additionally, the 3D imagery is a better visual image than a CT scan might produce and the modality optimizes surgical treatment and diagnoses dental abnormalities. The shape and position of malformed teeth could be assessed in all three spatial dimensions. With the natural MRI contrast, clearly identifiable were the teeth, cortical bone, mandibular canal and dental pulp.
