(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 16, 2013 ) Houston, TX -- In the wake of an apparent widespread fraud program happening around California stateÂ’s drug rehab centers, Sen. Ted W. Lieu has called on the LegislatureÂ’s Joint Legislative Audit Committee to audit the state-supported drug programs.
Several reports, including an undercover investigation by CNN and other watchdog agencies have discovered fraud throughout the system that pays for rehabilitation for drug and alcohol abusers with state and federal money. One counselor, who worked for a short time as an office assistant before turning in her own company, said fraud was rampant from Long Beach to Los Angeles.
Some drug and alcohol rehab centers are claiming and reporting to be treating dead people, those in prison, and those that have never been to drug rehab programs. According to Sen. Lieu, the alleged fraud in the Medi-Cal program is not only outrageous, but also damaging to the efforts of legitimate rehab centers trying to utilize their resources from the state of California to help rehabilitate ex-drug and alcohol users.
He has requested answers to several questions, including why some rehab centers continued to be in practice after regulators caught on to their fraud, and how felons were approved to run some of the centers. The committee has not yet made a decision for the request of an audit.
