(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 18, 2013 ) Dallas, TX -- New windows recently developed by scientists look and act as normal windows, letting heat and light pass through. However, there are high-tech crystals coating the window, that when activated, electrical charges trigger the vibrations in the crystals that stud the glass, causing them to absorb the sunÂ’s UV light and keep the room cool. By turning the voltage higher, the negative charges across the glass allow it to absorb visible light and tint the windows, to keep out light (and nosy neighbors).
The team of scientists who created this window, from the U.S. Department of Energy, started the project by creating a special glas coating that responds to electricity to save energy, but realized there were many more benefits to the windows.The windows also allow nightshift workers and young children to sleep soundly during the day without having to resort to dark blinds or covering the windows with dark blankets.
The product isnÂ’t ready for the market yet, but developers are hoping they will be available soon. Right now, itÂ’s believed that the smart windows will only cost about 20 percent more than a conventional window, making it affordable to every day homeowners.
The research was published in the journal Nature, which shows that applying a low voltage causes the crystals to absorb the rays from sun and blocking the heat, but still allowing the window to be see through.
