According to the Surgeon General, obesity today is officially an epidemic - labeled a disease, and arguably the most pressing health problem we face, costing the healthcare system an estimated $90 billion a year.

In fact, research shows that humans account for more than 17 million tons of excess weight. Those pounds are equivalent to the weight of 242 million people on the planet. Since the 1970s, the obesity rate has more than doubled in both adults and children, and more die in the US of too much food than of too little.
Currently, the obesity rate in the U.S. is 27.1 percent, which means that one in three adults is considered obese. As for children, one in six are obese, and obese children are more likely to become obese adults. Obesity increases the risk of sleep apnea, gout, heart attack, type II diabetes, stroke, and some cancers, and accounts for 100,000 deaths caused by obesity-related factors each year.
According to the 2013 U.S. News article the top ten fattest states are Mississippi, Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Unfortunately, the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index found that the adult obesity rate in the United States is on pace to surpass rates of prior years, meaning that it isnÂ’t likely to stop being a problem any time soon.
