Huawei Finding Revenue Despite Western Concern

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 19, 2013 ) Cary, NC -- Huawei Technologies is now running into western-made barriers in its attempt at global expansion; however, fortunately for the the worlds top electronic equipment maker, the Myanmar telecom landscape is all but theirs to control.

There are three of the nation's telecom operators, state-owned Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT), Yatanarpon Teleport (YTP), along with the Telenor company out of Norway, which have chosen Huawei as the main supplier.

The lone outlying player in the telecom sector is Qatari Ooredoo, which gained license along with Telenor, and has yet to announce its supplier. The negotiations with Huawei are said to be underway, however, according to the Asian News Network.

Huawei has been under fire for some time from western countries thanks to what the latter claims are suspicious actions that link the company to the Chinese government. Last fall, the U.S. House Intelligence Committee released its own report that discouraged American companies from buying the company's product.

Australia banned the Chinese company altogether for bids on national broadband fiber networks due to concerns over security. Huawei denied any ties to nefarious behavior or any such security concerns, according to Asian News Net.

Not all nations were so concerned about Huawei. New Zealand allowed the company to invest $117 million into the island over the last three years. Vodafone, Bell Canada, and Telekom Malaysia are all supplied by the company.

Myanmar did voice a bit of concern regarding security however, likely promoted by western influence. Now parliament is discussing the telecommunication bylaw; we must protect the security with what we can. If the companies are posing a threat to the security of the nation, we should oppose doing business with untrustworthy companies," MP Myint Thein, a member of the chamber's reform and development scrutinising committee, told the Asian News Network.
