(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 21, 2013 ) Gilbert, AZ -- The state of Ohio continues to be affected by the bed-bug infestation that has covered the United States. The state is now considered the worst affected out of all the states who are currently dealing with the pesky pests.
Ohioans are reminded not to let their collective guard down when it comes to the bug, as the Ohio State University put together three public service announcements that air across 18 television stations in the state.
There is a PSA that is working to undo myths surrounding the bedbugs, including who is affected by the infestations and whether the over-the-counter insecticides work well to stop the bloodsuckers.
Susan Jones of OSU Extension's noted household infestation is becoming more prevalent in the state as of recent years. “Even though they haven’t been in the news as much lately, bedbugs are growing in importance in Ohio and across the country,” said Jones. “Some of Ohio’s cities have the highest levels of bedbug infestations in the country.”
Jones and other experts are hoping that the PSA will help drive home the key factors that individuals must be concerned about regarding the bugs. “The first message is that that anybody can get bed bugs,” she said. “If you are a living, breathing human being, it can happen to you. We need to talk about the realities of bedbugs and eliminate the stigma associated with them.”
She continued by stating that residents should educate themselves about the availability to handle the methods of eliminating bedbugs.
“The best way to get rid of a bedbug infestation is to contact a licensed, qualified pest management professional who has experience dealing with this pest,” Jones said. “Exterminators will use either heat treatment or a combination of effective pest control measures, including insecticides.”
“One good method is to wash clothing, bedding and other items in hot water, dry them completely at the highest dryer setting, and then dry them for an additional 30 minutes to kill the bedbugs,” Jones said.
“Simply placing dry items into a dryer for 30 minutes on moderate-to-high heat is sufficient to kill all bedbug stages, eggs, nymphs and adults.”
