(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- With over half a million porn websites, Britain is the third largest country in the world to host internet pornography. According to a deplorable survey, Britain provides the World Wide Web with over 52 million pages of pornographic content. Many of these sites are registered under the national domain name (co.uk) including sites that promote rape videos.
The revelation has intensified pressure on Government officials to enforce an opt-out system for online porn. Nominet UK, a private company, is responsible for registering sites under Britain’s domain name and currently there are no restrictions on pornographers. Government adviser on child internet safety, John Carr, is calling on Nominet to bring this ‘free for all’ under control by banning certain words such as rape from web addresses. “The UK should not provide succor and comfort to porn merchants,” says Carr. He believes that porn sites should be under the domain name .xxx so there is no confusion as to the type of site a user (child or victim of rape) will be viewing.
The current policy of unrestricted access means these sites are paying money to use the British domain name. Commercial agent GoDaddy is selling web address rapeher.co.uk for £2.99 a year. Other sites paying to use the British domain name include Incestrape.neuken.co.uk and Asian-rape.co.uk, for example. GoDaddy has taken action recently on this particular site saying, “We are withdrawing the name while we carry out a review. We have not done this before.”
Nominet is reviewing its policy on registering the co.uk domain name and has recently referred two of the rape websites to the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF). Nominet says it will also be going through the .uk names database and checking the names against the IWF list of key words connected with illegal content.
