E-Cigs Found to Curtail Cigarette Smoke Intake for Heavy Users

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- In a new study with the American Journal of Health Behavior, electronic cigarettes may encourage hard-core users to cut back on their traditional cigarettes, even when they note a lack of actually wanting to.

The pilot study has found that of the 28 adult smokers, 25 of them reduced their smoking during the week they smoked e-cigs. This, despite each stating they were uninterested in smoking less at all.

Nearly a third of all the smokers cut their tobacco use in half, while four of the participants noted that they were smoking no traditional cigarettes at all by the end of the trial using the NJOY Kings cigarettes.

The reduction in smoking per day was over a third, at 39% overall, according to the study. The report also found that the e-cig users' absorption rate was comparable to that of nicotine patches that have previously been okayed by the Food and Drug Administration. In the report, the authors noted "these results suggest that this [NJOY] product delivered enough nicotine to suppress craving."

Michel Nides, who co-led the research along with Scott Leischow of the Mayo Clinic, noted that "a very good signal to go forward" when it comes to research on the effects of the products. He noted that the study will require follow ups that are on larger scales and with varying smoking groups.

"They have tremendous potential as [a] smoking-cessation aid," said Nides. "I think there's real potential for efficacy, with potentially fewer side effects," he said. "Obviously, more research is needed."

The study was funded by NJOY, and comes during a time in which nicotine vaporizers are being discussed in many city and state legislatures across the United States. E-Cig ales have erupted in the last two years, and are expected to reach $1 billion within this year. With possible regulations ahead, any positive health news for the products is a welcome sign for the industry.
