(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 22, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The French company said its internal network in an office in Roubaix, France had been compromised. After internal investigations, it was discovered that a hacker was able to get through a system administratorÂ’s email account.
In a statement, OVH said “With the email access, the hacker was able to gain access to the internal VPN of another employee, and through this VPN access, they were able to compromise the access points and get into the internal back office.”
After discovering the breach in security, the administrators assumed the atacker aimed to discover a long list of the companyÂ’s European customers and gain access to the installation server system in Canada. OVH did admit that the database lists of its European clients includes names, addresses, telephones and numbers.
It also included the passwords to the websites, but they were encrypted, salted and based on SHA-512. John Worrall wanted everyone to know what had happened, and many of their clients praised him for his transparency with the ordeal. This breach is another example of why the theft and exploitation of accounts is critical and devastating to everyone involved.
The company will be working to make sure no client was compromised, and then will figure out how the hacker was able to get into the perimeter.
