Monoprice Releases New Infograph on VGA Extender Comparison

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 22, 2013 ) Rancho Cucamonga, CA -- Monoprice recently presented a new infograph that outlines and explains the three most common types of cables used for computers. In the early days of computers, monitors were originally monochrome or two color. Over the years, technology has changed which has allowed for better ways of transmitting visual images onto your computer monitor.

The VGA is a trapezoid-shaped analog cable and stands for Video Graphics Array. It has 15 pins, and was originally developed by IBM in 1987, but they are still being produced and used widely today. The most common form of the VGA is the Super VGA, or SVGA, which allowed for resolutions greater than 640x480, such as the more common 800x600 or 1024x768.

Red, green and blue colors are used to create the images transmitted onto the screen, in different hues. VGA adapters, like HDMI, do not transmit audio signals, meaning you would need separate audio cables to transmit sound to a monitor.

The DVI cable is an analog cable that was developed in 1999 and is still used today. It stands Digital Visual Interface and was originally produced to replace the VGA. The digital visual interface allowed for computer monitors to display a true-color pallet. There are 29 pins in this connector, but just like the VGA, does not transmit audio.

The HDMI cable is an digital cable and was first produced in December of 2002 to allow for high definition video to be transmitted onto computer and television screens. It stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and has 19 pins of connection. Hitachi, Matsushita, Electric Industrial (Panasonic/National/Quasar) and Phillips are major companies that develop this type of cable, which transmits video as well as high-def audio, unlike the other types of cables.

While the newer cables are better at transmitting better video (and audio), VGA is still important. Nearly 99 percent of all desktop monitors still have a VGA port and 30 percent have only a VGA connector. Not only that, but more than 70 percent of flat-panel Tvs have VGA connectors and projectors are primarily VGA only.

There is always a way to convert one type of signal into the other, however, if you have a mismatch in devices, you can find adapter that find your needs at Monoprice.com, as well as other devices and accessories.
