Retail Numbers Across Expected to Surge in Next 5 Years

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The online retail sales across Europe are expected to double by the 2018 fiscal year to 323 billion euros, along with Amazon.com expecting to grow faster, says research firm Mintel.

In a new survey of 19 markets within Europe that were made exclusively to Reuters, Mintel predicts that online sales would see a growth of 188 billion euros in 2013 from the 166 billion in 2012.

Mintel made a note that Germany, Britain, and France would each remain the largest markets for online retail by 2018. The Netherlands, Poland, and Spain, were said to grow faster and the Nordic states were seen to have the highest online per-capita spending totals.

"There is a big North-South divide in e-commerce in Europe," said Mintel European retail analyst John Mercer. He noted that French participation levels lagged behind both Germany and Britain by nearly a half a decade, while Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Italy were all even farther behind in such respects.

Mintel noted that Amazon is now extending the lead on the continent, with a share of nearly 10% in 2012. The 9.8% share was a 0.6% increase from 2011, while Germany's Otto slipped by the same amount, from 3.9% to 3.3%

Mercer noted that Amazon was doing so well despite having only five countries dedicated to it. "Italy is a tiny market. Perhaps it would be more worthwhile to have launched dedicated sites for the Nordics," he said. "In terms of spend per capita, the Nordics are much higher."

Amazon had previously forecasted lower income and revenue while it deals with the weakened international market, which overshadows the improving profits and conditions within the United States as a whole.

British grocers were also listed among the top 10. Tesco held a 2.3% share, while Asda (owned by Walmart) and Sainsbury were 1.1% and 0.9% respectively.

"In mainland Europe, online shopping is largely non-grocery," Mercer said. "That is not going to change fast."
