(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 25, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- There are some who spend more time snapping photos of food than they do actually eating the morsels and entrees they order. However, there may be good reason for it according to new research results published in the journal of Psychological Science. According to the study, those who post images of dishes onto Instagram before partaking in the meal feel the food tastes better.
Researchers from the University of Minnesota and Harvard Business School noted that "rituals enhance the enjoyment of consumption because of the greater involvement in the experience that they prompt."
The rituals utilized in the study did not involve Instagram, but according to one of the authors, Kathleen D. Vohs, there were striking similarities between the behavior noted by researchers for those who photo share their meals. We didnÂ’t study it, but it seems like a ritual that could enhance the pleasure from food!" Vohs told The Huffington Post in an email.
In a particular experiment nearly half of the participants were asked to perform ritual before eating a candy bar. The other half of the participants were told to hold no ritual before the food consumption. According to researchers, the participants who engaged in ritualistic behavior before dining found it to be more flavorful, while the participants themselves were noted as having “behavioral savoring.”
In a post-study interview, Vohs stated that it was a good idea to create an eating ritual around one's food prior to eating it. "Make a ritual around eating each night. Set the table, bless the food, use a tablecloth, etc."
There are still some experts who say rituals, including taking pictures of food before consumption, is not a good idea. Some worry the proliferation of imagery of food could cultivate food obsessions for individuals.
