(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 25, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- While Facebook's Instagram is not killing Vine... on the vine, as some thought it would, that has not yet come to pass. Vine was the most downloaded application (outside gaming applications) in the Apple App Store for the month of June, according to the App Annie analytics website.
The application beat out Instagram, which was in fifth place for the month during the month of June. Reports that followed the release of the data from Onavo showed that all applications in the App Store showed a gain of six spots for Vine in June.
Instagram had previously debuted its new capability to allow for video uploading as part of its application as a way to bring in more users. Many had assumed that move would allow for the latter company to crush the newcomer, however, so far it has not occurred.
Most assumed a quick death for Vine given Facebook's ability to crush competition in the past. The problem is that the two do not directly compare and so it is hard to compare the user numbers for Vine is regards to its competition with Instagram. Measuring engagement is also difficult, as Instagram allows for both moving and still graphic sharing. Fine is solely used for video sharing, and thus cannot be directly compared.
Vine is a younger product than Instagram, which gives it a larger scale of growth due to its percentage inflation with smaller numbers. If there was a way to measure actual video viewership growth outside of all the other unnecessary numbers added from Instagram, one would be more capable of contrasting the two.
Instagram seems to still be the top dog in the race, as it has a steady stable of users and is more established. While many experts still believe it will kill Vine over time, the small application has already shown to pack a powerful punch.
