(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- At the 108th Annual Meeting of the american Sociological Association, Snyder will present his research paper “The Professionalized Body: truck Driving in the Age Flexibilization. The paper relies on Snyder’s own dissertation that examine how post-industrial capitalism is changing people’s work environments.
Snyder said that his research revealed “deeply concerning problems” with the way workplaces are changing, making it difficult to newer employees to make a meaningful life for themselves. He spent three years interviewing long-haul truck drivers, interviewing several different people in many different areas of the industry.
He found that truck drivers must learn the rhythm of their bodies and manipulate them to meet the demands of the market. This includes timing their sleep and taking advantage of the rising sun. Diet is also a big challenge for drivers, but luckily, the trucking industry is trying to address those problems. Truck drivers often eat fast foods, and are susceptible to developing diabetes and other diseases.
Snyder said he was excited when he started his research because he thought he would get to see the entire country during his study. However. all he saw were interstates, and that what a lot of truck drivers see as well. He mentioned one driver that went right by the Grand Canyon several times, but was never able to stop and see it.
When consumers buy something online, and they receive an email that their product has shipped, they set into motion a whole system of people whose job is able to get it to you within those “standard” business days, something Snyder says everyone should think about.
