Sensoria Smart Socks have a built-in magnetic anklet with companion apps for both Android and iPhone operating systems. Although the footwear may sound like a bad Silicon Valley spoof, it is the real thing.
Heapsylon, the company that will be manufacturing the Sensoria Smart Sock Fitness Tracker has already raised more than $72k, of the $87k it needs to make the tracker, on crowdfunding website Indiegogo. There are still 16 days left in its campaign but with 450 people already pledged to get the socks the company is set to reach their goal early. March 2014 is the planned date for the devices to go on sale. The cheapest price for the socks, $99, was pledged by 200 people almost immediately with latecomers able to pay $119. A pledge of $499 will allow a runner to become an "Alpha Runner." These jogging enthusiasts will receive a prototype tracker in December 2013, which will help the company in its final tests of the product before production.
To help prevent injuries, the devices will have textile sensors pads placed under each foot that measure timing and pressure to warn the runner of "heel striking or excessive forefoot running." A Bluetooth-enabled magnetic anklet snaps onto the cuff of a sock and connects to an iPhone or Android smartphone for analysis. The Indiegogo listing reads, "When you go home you won't just look at pretty charts; you'll be able to analyze in detail what you have done well, for how long and what action you can take to get to the next level." Developers will also have the ability to create additional apps that will use the data collected from the device. Heapsylon is offering a software development kit for $399 that will be released in September. Seven developers have already made a pledge for the kit.
