The Australian TV Takeover

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 28, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Traditional television in Australia is beginning to lose its spot as the most watched screen in the home. The growing trend today of TV streaming services over the Internet is gaining ground in leaps and bounds with names such as Apple's iTunes Store, SBS On Demand, Fetch TV, Quickflix and ABC iView. The latest addition to this list is FoxtelÂ’s new pay-as-you-go internet TV service (partly owned by News Corp). Australian audiences are increasingly turning to computers, tablets and even the small screens of smartphones to watch their favorite TV shows, according to industry experts.

A wide range of devices will support Foxtel Play including laptop computers and the Xbox 360 games console. Late model Samsung smart TV as well as PC or Mac computers will also support the TV-streaming service that lets users watch pay-TV channels. Jim Rudder, Foxtel product executive director, was "surprised" to discover the popularity of at home computer viewers. "We didn't expect such a big uptake with PC and Mac viewing - it's been the strongest,'' Rudder said. Foxtel PlayÂ’s offering went live on July 30 and officially launches today. "We thought maybe the smart TV experience would be the most popular, and it's been strong too, but the strongest response by far has been with PC and Mac," he added.

Foxtel Play service is contract-free and offers four channel packs consisting of a choice of 47 live TV channels. Monthly subscriptions start at $25 with sports and movie packages available for an additional $25 each. Foxtel Go on-demand TV-streaming service is also available on Apple iPhones and iPads as well as some Samsung tablets and phones. The Go app has already been downloaded over one million times with more than 360,000 users since its November launch. However, the majorities of Go users were choosing to stream channels live rather than watch TV shows on demand. "Eighty per cent of the viewing is still live,'' Rudder said. “The biggest proportion of viewing has been for Sky News and sport and on the weekend we're getting big peaks.”
